Was this review helpful? Hopefully it will exceed the current 5.8. This is a slow paced thriller about a girl who was kidnapped at the age of 9 and kept in captivity in a basement for 8 years. Then all of a sudden they are talking to the abducted girl via web cam. Anyone who's remotely dealt with the kind of situation involved will immediately recognize the ambiguity and confusion and immediacy of the past in the present that accompanies this particular trauma. How is it possible that Ryan Reynold's character does not look one iota different in eight years time, which makes it almost impossible to keep track of past and present as the the story jumps back and forth. Like, how did they even get to that point? And the 2 hot detectives are the icing on the cake to make this a barely acceptable TV movie.
It started off promising but in the end failed. They acted childish and inexperienced, not at all like the child abduction detectives they are meant to be. Was this review helpful? The summary of the movie interested me but I did not have high hopes given the 5/10 rating. I will never do that again. There are so many holes you could have played cartoons during the movie. Mixed feelings! I also admire Mr. Atom Egoyan for writing, directing and producing this movie.
The time-line hopping tries to keep the suspense up, which doesn't always succeed though. Tina meets with the police regularly to discuss their case but Matthew, originally a suspect, has become a vigilante in the search for Cassandra. I was hoping for something awesome like the original The Vanishing, but I have to say the poster was the only good thing about this D grade film. When the abduction first happened, the police immediately suspect the father, which OK yes might happen in reality but to the point that it was done seemed really over the top.

Sets in a small snowy Canadian town where a ten year old girl was mysteriously disappeared and so the film focused on the life of her parents who are eager to see her even after 8 years past. Minutes later, he returns to find her missing. Was it his lack of inspiration for the role or just horrible directing? "The Captive", the latest from eclectic Canadian auteur Atom Egoyan, took a royal beating at the French festival earlier this year mere weeks after the premiere of his critically reviled Memphis Three docudrama "Devil's Knot".The fact that he's been getting mediocre reviews for fourteen years might be proof that a director who once set the world on fire had lost his touch. Don't waste your time with this piece of poop. At the ice skating rink, Vicky questions Cassandra's former skating partner, Albert, about their history, pressuring him for details on how he was impacted by the disappearance. This just proves that most users are probably persons who don't understand a well constructed narrative and don't have an eye for beautiful cinematography. Matthew steps briefly into a diner and comes out to find that his young daughter Cassandra has vanished without a trace from the back of his truck. He confronts the abductors to buy more time and steals Vicky's cell phone.
No depth. But everything about this movie was just so convenient that I wanted to puke. But unlike some of the other users, I went in just wanting to watch a good movie. To the point that it was quite confusing for the viewer to watch. Let me start by stating this isn't the greatest movie ever made - You've only got to look at some of the other reviews to see that. Nobody is explained. Plain and simple, this movie is so ridiculous it's almost funny. His voice, his demeanor, his facial expressions, all just completely over the top. The cops and parents, hopelessly look for any clue of her being alive. A sister/cop killed in action? However... Themes of borders, traps and different forms of morbid fixation rise to the surface. The film stars Ryan Reynolds, Scott Speedman, Rosario Dawson, Mireille Enos, Kevin Durand, and Alexia Fast.It was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or in the main competition section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.
I thought the acting here was some kind of camp. Maybe the director was inspired to make this by his previous film, which was similar and based on the real, but that ends differently. Was this review helpful? Go watch it and don't let the rating create low expectations.
