This was an incredibly written, heartbreaking tale. I love the simple artistry of this book. This is a book that both boys and girls would love, even though it had an almost old-fashioned feel. Turner and his mother become outcasts in their town. And the ending where the author goes on about how creatures in their evolved form are sad when they're separated, I thought, "if we're just mistakes and worthless freaks of nature that happened to evolve, what basis do we have for sadness and why do we feel it if we're just like every other animal?" The town hasn't changed their attitude/opinions, Turner's situation hasn't changed much, and a lot of people are dead. The various themes and conflicts are delicately and deftly presented and handled. This was a really good book. I loved the way the sea breeze is itself a character, and how much a few of the human characters surprised me.The friendship between a preacher's son and a black girl in 1912 Maine is tested by the prejudice of the townspeople. Welcome back. Lizzie shows Turner a new world along the Maine coast from digging clams to rowing a boat next toNot only is Turner Buckminster the son of the new minister in a small Maine town, he is shunned for playing baseball differently than the local boys. Schmidt weaves themes of not fitting in and racism and exclusion and grief all into one season of Turner Buckminster's life.

But calling 'Lizzie Bright' an historical novel, though it is based on real events, is too limiting. Excellent. The characters were mostly stock characters though, which was disappointing. Also there were too many deaths!

Let's just say that this is probably the best 1-star book I will ever rate. In terms of sadness and tragedy, this one throws that one out of the water. He didn't know how much longer he could stand it. I want everyone I know to read it --it's that good. The novel is based on a true story --how this main townspeople of Phippsburg wanted to turn the island into a tourist area and what they did to claim the land from the African Americans who had lived there for generations. More soon.Alright...I have so much to say about this book...this is a winner, a really good book.

But here's my quibble. I love the simple artistry of this book. Because it's not actually very sweet. everyone ages 12 and up who can appreciate a well-written, touching taleWow. I recommend it to adults as well as tweens and teens.
