Part of me still feels that way but I'm now used to the way things eventually worked out so I'm now okay with that. Jack Soo was always great and Nancy Kwan, in spite of my protests, was very cute. It is beautifully photographed, has an intriguing story, great acting and very good songs and dances. The 1961 musical "Flower Drum Song" is a fabulous Ross Hunter [1] production (top-notch art direction, cinematography, costume design, set decoration, film editing and sound). Even if these are not on a level with the other R&H scores, they are well-written and memorable. But, it never really clicked in a big way. Not surprising, since the music is by the incomparable team of Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein II. It features Rodger's brassiest and jazziest score and the best choreography of any of their musicals. How Richard Rodgers was OK with not dubbing his singing is beyond me. I was expecting it to be outdated, and even fully racist, but I was surprised at how much of the racism and cultural stereotyping is veiled by "humor" in a way that felt sort of distressingly familiar, in a very "We at Hollywood jokingly nod our cap to this display of obligatory diversity" type of way.More broadly, this is one of those movies that kinda shambles along, unsure of how to be Every film that has ever been nominated for an Academy Award in any category. I've never forgiven the producers for not casting Pat Suzuki in the role of Linda Low.
In fact, one of my favorite sequences was his being knocked out twice in the "Sunday" number! And certainly, in cinematic terms alone, the film version is one of the worst of the stage-to-screen R&H adaptations. I have often wondered what would have happened if he had directed the movie.
Was this review helpful? Even today, on the television set, it holds up well and the overture just jumps out at you. It makes sense to finally have this story told from a truly Asian-American perspective, and hopefully, though some of Hwang's choices sound a bit odd, (Putting in something about CHinese opera, cutting Sammy Fong and the whole "Other Generation" song and idea, which is pretty crucial to the original, and making Mei Li a refugee from Chinese Communism) hopefully this new version will further allow people to reconsider their view of this show and its film version. Moreover, there is the music, which while not grade-A material from the legendary team, has enough of their recognizably melodious style to make the whole affair quite entertaining now. I found Flower Drum Song enjoyable in the way most 1960s musicals are enjoyable: humorous and entertaining if you look past the implicit racism and sexism. how do you make a musical that is both flat and littered with caricatures??? With Crazy Rich Asians coming out, it leaves me amazed thinking about how rare it is that we get a movie with so many roles for Asians coming from Hollywood. Many of the songs are very well done and enjoyable, especially Nancy Kwan's "I Enjoy Being a Girl." The bright colors, beautiful dance sequences, and one of my personal favorite Oscar and Hammerstein songs (Love, Look Away), contribute to the fact that the movie itself, was done well. Flower Drum Song holds a special place for me because it was the first Broadway show I ever saw. It was a major breakthrough at the time to have a lavish film showcasing Asian performers, but darn, there are also issues with how these characters were presented!

Whoops! This one takes me right back to the sixties when we were young and full of hope for the future. Although the Broadway show did not produce many hit songs, watching this film version of the popular musical comedy offers an opportunity to appreciate just how wonderful many of the songs are, in particular the deceptively simple "A Hundred Million Miracles." The original story is so charming, with a lovely score and sympathetic and enchanting characters. My only complaint with casting is Jack Soo.

Some Rodgers and Hammerstein movies hold up very well today, like "The King and I," some don't, like "South Pacific." It just doesn't care about her!Otherwise....yes, it's just fine, no show-stoppers but nothing embarrassing.A problematic film for sure but a very interesting watch.
