This specimen is originally from a wildharvested specimen found on the North shore of Long Island, NY.
Seeds should be started in late spring.Prickly pears need a location that receives full sun with well-draining soil. The Eastern Prickly Pear is a very attractive cacti with cold tolerance, heat tolerance, drought tolerance, and the pollinators absolutely love them in late spring/early summer; not to mention the wows people give out too. The seeds need shade to germinate and should be kept moist until that time.Propagation from pads is much simpler and yields faster results. Here in S California it is a real miniature cactus, rarely exceeding 2-3" in height.

They root readily without much fuss. In fact, simply laying a pad on the ground will generally result in it rooting over time. Pads can be calloused off to be planted elsewhere or shared with friends.
Word of caution: they don’t have ‘thorns’ but rather Glochids ( Propagation is incredibly easy… You’d take the ‘pads’ you get and simply bury the butt end slightly in the soil. This variety should be hardy to -30F. In most areas, rainfall will be enough to sustain established plants. More importantly, however, the soil needs to drain well, as residual moisture or puddling can cause the plant to rot.
