I have seen brown ones, black ones or gray ones, but never a black one with a brown tail. Is it possible that this was a food stash? We also maintain several bird feeders and enjoy the squirrels as well as a great variety of birds.

Wow, it’s usually the other way round that grey squirrels move in on red squirrels, not reds on greys.

My husband now leaves them a supply of water..and often food! When not eating, they stay clear of each other and live in harmony.

Once the tail is gone it stays gone and the poor fella just looks goofy.Squirrels can live without their tail but are at more risk for an early death.A squirrel without a tail will not be able to balance as well in the treetops and is at greater risk for a fall.
